The Volcanos of Reykjavik

So we’ve jumped off the plane in Iceland and hit the ground hiking as our first real day trip takes us “Inside the Volcano”.

This is a unique experience where we hike to the peak of a dormant volcano and get lowered 140m into its magma chamber on a cable gantry. As we are wearing harnesses and helmets for this, and are attached to cables, I choose to call this activity “Volcano Abseiling”.

Once back in Reykjavik we do a bit more shopping for supplies to replace our lost luggage then explore downtown, which happens to include a dedicated phallus museum. But before we even get in, we stop at the bar for a quick beer tasting platter.

Jokes aside this museum is actually quite interesting, and finds a good balance between actual historical and medical science, and dick jokes.

After that its on to Pufa, a small green hill which is much smaller than expected. Its actually a piece of cultural art, as we found out the top contains a small hut of rotting fish, representing Icelands national dish of Hákarl.

With our appetites well and truly gone from that smell, we somehow manage to eat dinner at a small but cute little food hall, which we find in the coming days is a very common thing in Nordic countries.

Then head past another art installation- this time a sculpture of a viking long boat by the water.

Our last stop today is the big church on the hill.

Despite it now being past 10pm, it is still very bright as the sun doesn’t actually set this time of year in Iceland’s summer, so we walk down the rainbow road from the church and get an evening beer sitting outdoors on the sidewalk recounting the humour and oddity of our time in Iceland’s capital.

Next step, Selfoss!
