Ice, Ice, Iceland

OMG here we go again… really, already?! As we continue to type the rest of the blog from the South America trip, we board an Emirates flight from Sydney to Dubai to Munich. This will be a 14hr flight followed by a 6hr flight and then a 4hr flight, it just seems so appealing.

Flying emirates was a great experience, the food was great and we felt very well looked after the entire flight. They even gave Dory a kids colouring book when she saw another kid with one and got entertainment envy. Best of all, after the 2nd time we pressed the call bell, ordering a whisky & dry both times, the 3rd time we pressed the call bell the flight attendant brought us another without even asking!

With such a short stopover of 50min in Munich, we were initially worried we wouldn’t make the connection, especially as we were seated in the very back of a jumbo. Thankfully making friends with the flight attendant helped us as she escorted us upstairs after the flight to let us leave through the much smaller 1st class queue and we made the connection even with time for a celebratory local bier.

All had ended well for our short connection… or so we thought! *cue dramatic music*

When we landed in Reykjavik, we rushed to the baggage carousel only for our bags not to come out. Icelandair’s baggage help desk was extremely streamlined at reporting our luggage lost, giving us a toiletries pack, and offering us free waterproof clothing hire from a shop in downtown Reykjavik, so I imagine this must happen fairly frequently.

Of course this delay did mean we missed our car rental pickup bus, so we had to call the hire company and get them to send another. By the time we got to our accomodation at Downtown Reyjakvik Apartments, both Dory and I were starving, as were my parents and brother who were meeting us there, so our first stop in Reykjavik was an authentic Icelandic dinner of seafood soup, and fish and chips.
