Tectonic Diving

The next morning Dory and I wake up at 3am, confirm our bags have arrived, and head back to Reykjavik to pick them up at 6.15am. We get back to Selfoss just in time for a 9am breakfast with the rest of the fam then head out for our dive in the Silfra fissure. On our way we stop at Kerid crater for a quick walk and photo with the phosphorescent green water, then its on to Thingvellir national park.

Dory doesn’t scuba dive, so she takes the snorkel tour of the fissure while I don my dive gear for the underwater version. We both have to wear dry suits (a first for Dory and only my 3rd dive in one) and follow more or less the same route.

The fissure is spectacular, it was a bucket list scuba dive for me and absolutely worth the hype to be diving between 2 tectonic plates (the North American and the European) and touch both at once.

The water is crystal clear, and the geological formations stunning, but at 2degC its not for the faint hearted. I wore thermals under dry suit undergarment, with a 2nd thermal layer on top and 2 pairs of woolen socks. I was pleasantly surprised though that despite being underwater for 44m, only 1 finger and 1 toe got cold, and only in the last few minutes, so the 2degC was definitely not as bad as I thought it would be.

We then explore the aboveground rock formations of Thingvellir before getting back on the golden circle road to catch up with the rest of the fam (who opted to avoid the 2deg water).

We stop at Geysir, the place and name of the original geyser, and run up the path to try to make it a quick visit. As we run past the first geyser called Strokker, it erupts spectacularly.

After going a little further to geyser named Geysir, we realise its now dormant and doesn’t erupt anymore, so we go back past the first one as it erupts for a second time. We later found out Dad had to stand and wait 10 minutes to see it go off only once!

Our next running stop is at Gullfoss, where we leg it down a long set of stairs for a spectacular view of a very large waterfall, complete with rainbow.

After this stop we head to Secret Lagoon where we catch up with Mum, Dad and Mike and get into the natural hot springs for a well deserved communal bath… and a couple of local beers of course.
