Lake Shit-Tits

After an uncomfortable overnight bus (alternating between boiling hot and freezing cold), we arrive in Puno, our first real elevation rise. On the way we stopped at a lookout at 4400m above sea level and discovered that the air is actually pretty thin up here.

Our main stop in Puno is to see Lake Titicaca, which at 3800m above sea level is the world’s highest navigable lake.

Before we get on the lake we decide to climb a short staircase up to the Condor lookout, which looks over the town of Puno. It turns out even a few hundred vertical metres can be one hell of a climb when you’re already starting at 3800m!

Needless to say we were puffed by the top and had to take plenty of breaks on the way, but the view at the top was worth it.

Once back down from the lookout we get on a boat to head out to the famous floating islands of Lake Titicaca, which have been built using traditional methods of layering interwoven reeds on top of each other. An impressive construction method, and a lovely sunset to finish our day with.
