We then continued on the bus until we came to Huacachina; a little oasis in the desert. What a site! The bus was late so we were also late for our dune buggy/sand boarding tour.
We found out you could only lay on the boards the Peru Hop organised so we raced to hire proper boards and skis with clip in boots.
We were once again racing around for the day. We got to the dunes and started our trek up. We piled into buggies and off we went. The driver was absolutely nuts!!!
He drove so fast and over such steep dunes that we felt like we were on a rollercoaster with no tracks… it was AWESOME!
The boarding/skiing was fun but it was a lot slower than on snow. We still had 1.5 hrs hire left so we boys headed for the highest dune we could see.
Finally, we got to our accommodation which ended up being the party hostel. We sat down to a BBQ with an hour of free drinks then a quiz. There were some challenges during the quiz for bonus points. One was to be the one to swap an article of clothing with another person. Dory and Doug sprang into action but took off outer layers and swapped shirts AND pants. They were not the fastest but the lady gave bonus points… perhaps because she got a face full of boob in the process.
After a relaxing morning wandering around the oasis, we leave Huacachina and stop at the Nazca tower to view the world famous Nazca lines. The view from the tower was pretty amazing, both of the indigenous artwork and the surrounding landscape.
After a brief stop for dinner in Nazca city, we take the midnight train (actually the 6pm overnight bus) going to Arequipa, where our journey continues...
